An unconventional farm near Aberdeen, SD

Mission:

We are committed to serve our community by providing the highest quality chicken, turkey, eggs, and pork using natural and 'unconventional' farming practices that nourish the land and creatures. The pigs root, the chickens scratch, and the turkeys chase grasshoppers. All allowed to express their natural animal instincts.

Chickens

Chickens

Our chickens run freely during the day and bed down in a portable coop at night. They are moved periodically to give them fresh grass and bugs to feast upon. Their supplemental feed is spare garden produce, and organically raised, corn/soy-free, non-gmo feed that was grown in our region. We raise both meat birds and egg layers.

The mother sows also raise their piglets freely in this way and they all frolic happily in all of their pigness.Their supplemental feed is spare garden produce and organically raised, non-gmo, and grown in our region. Our pork is mostly heritage breed and heritage crosses, which are known for their delicious marbling and complex gourmet flavor.

FarmPractices

NaturallyRaised

We proudly grow our animals as nature intended: with high quality feed, grass, fresh produce, and sunshine. We use no hormones (which is illegal) or steroids, sub-therapeutic antibiotics, beta-agonists such as ractopamine, or other artificial growth promotants of any kind on our farm.

Biodynamic

"Holistic and regenerative farming practices focused on the integration of plants, animals, soil health and biodiversity. They keep the ecosystem in balance by producing the nutrients needed to nourish all aspects of the farm with a minimum of inputs imported from off site."
- LOCAL: The New Face of Food and Farming in America, by Douglas Gayeton

Permaculture

"The development of agricultural ecosystems intended to be sustainable and self-sufficient."
– Permaculture Institute

RotationalGrazing

Rotational grazing is periodically moving livestock to fresh paddocks, to allow pastures to regrow. Rotational grazing requires skillful decisions and close monitoring of their consequences. Modern electric fencing and innovative water-delivery devices are important tools. Feed costs decline and animal health improves when animals harvest their own feed in a well-managed rotational grazing system.
